What’s Going On This Winter

In the last number of weeks we have written about social media marketing, networking and youth entrepreneurship.

These are important to your business, but you may be thinking ‘how do I get started’?

An important mandate of the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre is to assist entrepreneurs and business owners to improve their skills and learn best business practices. In other words, not only do we write about these topics, but we offer opportunities to discuss them and practical ways to implement them into your business/business plan.

A great way to do this is by attending local seminars and workshops where detailed information can be delivered by experts in a variety of fields.

Some of the events, seminars or conferences we offer take place on a monthly, seasonal or yearly basis. However, our door is always open to new or prospective entrepreneurs in Cornwall, S.D. & G. and Akwesasne to discuss these topics. Likewise, our Small Business Enterprise colleagues are available to assist in other areas of Ontario.

This winter we have some very exciting seminars taking place to not only connect you with other entrepreneurs, but to learn tools to take back and implement in your business.

Seminars taking place this winter include:

Winter E-Business Series: Now more than ever, your customers are expressing a growing demand for E-Business, and they are resorting to the internet to find information on your business. These E-Biz Seminars are an interactive training experience addressing the fundamentals of on-line business for companies new to the internet, but also for existing on-line businesses to evaluate and plan for future E-Biz programs.

Breakfast Connections: Networking sessions are a great way to connect with likeminded individuals. Join the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre, the SD&G Community Futures Development Corporation and the Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce for breakfast once a month to take a break, connect with other entrepreneurs and business owners, share & learn from our guest speaker.

Summer Company presentations: Summer Company is program offered to assist students ages 15-29 in starting and running their own business through the summer months.

As Summer Company entrepreneurs, these students received a $1,500 grant for their business start-up costs and another $1,500 grant upon completion of their final reports at the end of their summer business season.  Additionally, each student receives hands-on business coaching from local community business leaders.

Not only does the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre travel to local schools to present the program to students, but we also present at local job fairs.

No matter what topic you are interested in, seminars and events are a perfect opportunity to gain the confidence and understanding. So get involved in your community, meet new people and learn a new topic!

Breakfast is Back in 2011!

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend!

If you have read a number of the Small Biz Cafe posts, you will notice that I often write about Breakfast Connections. Breakfast Connections is an important monthly event organized by the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre, The SDG Community Futures Development Corporation and the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce.

Once a month, we hold a breakfast where individuals in the community come together to network and learn from our speaker.

This month, we are having a very special breakfast connections entitled “What’s in it for me? Hearing the views of Local Dignitairies on the Business Community”.  This event will feature dignitaires from Cornwall and S.D.G, including MP Lauzon and MPP Brownell, in a friendly dialogue about their prioirities for the business community in 2011.

This is a great way to hear the views from your local representatives in a pleasant atmopshere . As always, our event will feature a delicious breakfast and announcement of the February topic.

Recognizing Excellence

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a very happy and safe New Year!

The last few posts have been about some of the new and exciting changes happening here at the centre. The Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre (CBEC) is always trying to keep the information it provides relevant by offering seminars and support to best suit your current needs. Whether you are a youth interested in experiencing entrepreneurship through the Summer Company Program, or an individual wishing to learn more to help your existing or new small business grow, we offer many services to help you and your entrepreneurial interests thrive.

Being an entrepreneur or involved in business requires passion and determination to make ones business a reality. One way entrepreneurs, businesses and individuals in Cornwall and area are recognized for their accomplishments and progress is through The Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. These awards recognize the successes of individuals in Cornwall and region in the areas of:

  • Commerce
  • Community work
  • and/or Innovation

In addition, this banquet also presents the Citizen of the Year Award.

In addition to the CBEC’s move to a new office, last week was our fourth Breakfast Connections. It featured speaker Julie Potvin who taught how to de-stress and relax for the holidays.

Last week was also the Team Cornwall Year in Review event which took place at Galaxy Cinemas. It was fantastic to see all of the progress made throughout the year in our community.

I hope everyone has a great New Year and stays tuned for lots of exciting events that will be taking place in 2011!  More Breakfast Connections, E-Biz Seminars, Summer Company, and some exciting small business events!
